The Vishvasa Challenge: Jan 2015

According to the ancient, great yogi Sadashiva, or simply Shiva, there are 7 secrets of success. The first secret is vishvasa (veesh + wash) meaning firm determination. Without taking firm determination before starting any task, one can never get success. So firm determination is a must. And that will be our monthly challenge to begin 2015. See below how to apply this principle to our monthly challenge series.

For clarity and maximum benefit, let’s keep it simple and compartmentalize it.

1. Vishvasa Challenge on the mat: Take the firm determination to achieve a new pose, a new variation, or a new “height” in a particular pose. Whether you are working on balance, strength, flexibility, or tranquility, take your practice to a new place.

2. Vishvasa Challenge off the mat: Take the firm determination to incorporate yoga into your life off the mat. It might be deep breathing at particular moments during the day. It might be an evening meditative session. It might be a day or half-day of fasting. Think about your practice and how your day evolves and see how you can creatively make space in your daily routine for yoga-based renewal.

3. Vishvasa Challenge at the dining table: Take the firm determination to inculcate a healthier eating pattern into your life. This might mean better food choices, eating at a regular time rather than constant snacking throughout the day, or it might mean eating more slowly. Take a moment to consider your current dietary habits and implement some ways to enhance the way you eat.

4. Vishvasa Challenge in this world: Take the firm determination to make your mark in some sphere of life: Personal, social, emotional, economic, environmental, or spiritual etc.

You are welcome to share your challenge with us – that will help inspire others and engender community support – another important aspect for meeting success. Look forward to hearing from you…

  1. What a wonderful idea! I believe I would try to better my Half Moon pose on the mat, and Crow pose at work! As far as dining table, I can definitely eat more slowly.
    Thanks for the challenge Satyam.

    1. Very nice Reza – all sounds good to me – to some it may be befuddling how you can improve your crow pose at work – as I understand – being the pro skydiver that you are – you’d like to fly like a crow – literally. That said, your crow jumpback on the mat never ceases to amaze. All the best with half-mooon and eating slowly.

  2. I love this opportunity to set specific goals! On the mat: regain strength in standing poses but also strengthen patience with myself in dealing with physical limitations. Off the mat: more mindfulness in mental challenges. At the table: yikes-stop eating so many sweets! In the world: bring as many hands on science experiences to my wonderful new students as I can! Fully appreciate and maintain the bonds with my family and friends. Happy New Year to all!

  3. Oh hi Annie. How are you. I Miss you too. I was just telling Satyam that my goal on the mat is to make my half moon look like yours:) That would be quite an achievement.

  4. LOL Reza! You haven’t seen me in awhile – I now do more of a quarter moon but I am grateful to be able to do that! Wish you would all come by some by some Saturday!
