April 2017 is the Snack Challenge, and here is a listing of healthy snacks that folks are sharing….Send us yours

#1: Mara writes us:

(a) Toasted Ezekiel bread with almond butter (or any nut butter) and drizzled honey.
(b) Raw almonds: Ā Sometimes mixed with other nuts or dried fruit, depending on what I have.
(c) Sliced apple with nut butter.
(d) Small (maybe a half teaspoon) of Chaywanprash (by itself, or on toast or apple slices or crackers)
(e) Homemade kale chips with olive oil and spices.

#2: A wayward yogini writes:

Here is my only snack that I am willing to admit to: a banana sliced in half and spread with peanut butter. I am taking the 5th on everything else!

Suffice to say that there are other combinations with peanut butter that I really enjoy!šŸ˜

Iā€™m with Mara on the raw almonds for a great snack. I also enjoy pistachio nutsā€¦they take the edge off when I feel famished. Also, sweet peppers with humus is generally my go to snack. I also must admit to chocolate covered almonds for a snackā€¦healthy or not? [Yes, healthy – Eds]

#4: Susan writes:

Almonds!! on my deskā€¦. cutie clementine orangesā€¦. two a morningā€¦.. small applesā€¦ā€¦

At home, at nightā€¦. popcorn with parmesan cheese on top. True, it doesnā€™t stickā€¦. but you can spoon what is left out and eat it.

There is a bean hummusā€¦. maybe Christopher Fine Foodsā€¦ I thinkā€¦ half and half with nonfat greek yoghurt and it tastes like nachosā€¦. without cheeseā€¦. but good on bread or pita chipsā€¦.

[And] berries. If they are in the plastic container, you can throw it in a backpack and they donā€™t crush. I eat the whole (1 lb??) container either as a midmorning snack at my desk, or on a hike. Blueberries, blackberries, raspberries.

Reply: Thanks Susan! Also,Ā hummus is so easy and delicious to make at home. There are so many great recipes out there and experimenting is always a good idea. Usually you cannot go wrong with hummusā€¦ – Satyam

OK, here’s one of my perhaps not too guilty pleasures of a snack – nonfat cottage or ricotta cheese, mixed with cardamom spice to taste (I like quite a bit of this), a few raisins and some chopped pistachios, and a drizzle of honey on top. Mmmm…

#6: Teresa writes us:

Fresh fruit is always a top snack choice. I also love trail mix. Nuts, dried cranberries and dark chocolate.

    1. Thanks Susan for sharing your series of suggestions – I shall include them in the main post above to ensure everyone sees them.

The only thing I would add is that hummus is so easy and delicious to make at home. There are so many great recipes out there and experimenting is always a good idea. Usually you cannot go wrong with hummus…
