Free to ALL in Costume

Refreshments Served

This is a great occasion to be enjoyed by all and do come in costume – that is the way to go.

The first year I was a laundry basket; the second year I was Abe Lincoln; the third year (last year) I was a pirate; what will I be this year?? What will you be?? These are the pertinent questions of the day.

Remember those who show up for this one – and we do normally get a full house – get good karma for life. Totally guaranteed not to be attacked by goblins ever again!!!

See you there – unless you’re too scared!!

Anatomy Back & HipsYoga Anatomy: Back & Hips

Sun, Sep 26, 2p – 4:30p
Galesville Memorial Hall

$30 by Sep 22 – $35 after Sep 22

Explore your anatomy – theoretically & practically – in this highly interactive workshop. Co-presented by Shawn C. O’Neill, D.P.T. (Bayside Physical Therapy and Sports Rehabilitation) & Satyam, this session will focus on developing a greater understanding of how our yoga postures (asanas) affect the health of our hips and back. Learn what goes into a pose from the inside out. We will begin with a short informative presentation and segue into an extended yoga practice marked by stop & start action, giving maximum opportunity for dialog, inquiry, and modifications. While the class will address the “big anatomical picture” of the hips and back, there will certainly be time to address personal health issues & concerns related with these areas. This is a unique opportunity to gain an expanded perspective of your yoga practice and enhance your ability to maintain proper care of your hips and back. All are welcome – register early as we expect this to fill quickly.

Handouts given; please bring a pen; notebook, i-Pad or journal (optional).

Dr. O’Neill holds a Bachelor of Science in Kinesiology from University of Maryland – College Park, and a Doctor of Physical Therapy degree from University of Maryland – Eastern Shore.

Here Are the Details…

labyrinthThe new labyrinth at St James Parish (Lothian) is now complete. It is an absolutely wonderful presentation that can serve as a place for walking meditation, contemplation or simply as a refuge from the rigors of life. Do be sure to take note of this great addition to our community.

It has to be mentioned that Patti Sachs spearheaded this project, funded by memorial contributions, from beginning to end (1 – 2 years). There is more to come also! Patti informs us that as soon as summer’s heat passes a garden will be planted around the labyrinth. Without her vision, diligence and perseverance, this entire project certainly would never have happened – nor come to fruition. And it is she who sent me the above photo with the note that “Everyone is welcome!!”.

In this open forum, we will deepen our knowledge, advance our practice & explore poses like triangle, half moon, and their variations as well as challenging & strength building sequences, arm balances & more.

This is the ideal time to get the essentials in a step-by-step format. There will be plenty of time for questions, personal & peer review, and requests.

This workshop is ideal for anyone interested in furthering their practice, transitioning into Strength & Fitness classes, learning new variations, and / or reviewing the foundation of poses in your current level of practice.

Yes, I want to register right now…

Baby Caroline (comp)Please welcome Baby Caroline – the latest and greatest addition to our yoga and human family.

Born Caroline Juliette David to parents Sarah (Mon Night NECC) & Buddy David on 24 June 2010, Caroline weighed in at weighed 7 pounds 10 ounces and was 20 inches long. A very warm welcome to Baby Caroline. (Note: In the above photo, she is all of 3 days old!!)

Many of you know Sarah who has been an ardent yoga practitioner the last 3-4 years or more. And she practiced in one of our challenging Strength and Fitness classes all the way to the late stages of her pregnancy. Sarah was doing side plank (vasisthasana) with the best of them – as well as lunges, Warrior III, Half Moon and more.

In fact one night when she was in her 8th month and had a big belly, Sarah calmly turned into side plank with such ease, that I literally stopped the class and we all just watched her as she gracefully held the pose and then seamlessly exited – all the while with Baby Caroline inside!! (I am still kicking myself for not having my camera that night!)

Great job Sarah on a marvelous pregnancy and congratulations to both Sarah and Buddy as they grow their family together.

summer_solsticeHappy Solstice to One & All!!

The word solstice comes from the Latin sol meaning “sun” and the Latin root sistere meaning “to stand still.”

Why solstice?? Because the sun stands still in declination; that is, the apparent movement of the Sun’s path north or south comes to a stop before reversing direction.

Normally we use the terms summer and winter solstice; but that is not entirely correct since when the northern hemisphere is undergoing summer solstice then the southern hemisphere is undergoing winter solstice, and vice versa. For that reason, some simply use the terms June solstice and December solstice.

The solstice days are also the longest and shortest days of the year.

In some areas, the solstice marks the start of a new season, either summer or winter. This is true in most temperate zones. However in tropical areas like India that have six or more seasons a year – not just four – then the solstice often falls in the middle of a particular season.

Wherever you are – happy solstice day to you – may it be the start of bright new beginnings!!

ECO YOGA DAY – Sunday, April 25, 2p – 4p Galesville Memorial Hall

All funds (100%, every penny) go toward a green project. Donate Today…

Bee Home in ForestThis is our ECO-YOGA Day Project… home sweet home – literally.

It is a bee hive for native stingless bees. Or what we call a bee condo as it comes complete with an indoor swimming pool, massage parlor and wi-fi. Along with a constant buzz. That way the bees need not make the noise themselves.

Bee Home On CarKidding aside, this really is a wonderful and very neat project that every participant at Eco Yoga Day will be assembling. This project was conceived of by Karen McDonald, an environmental educator, who will be facilitating and leading the eco part of ECO YOGA DAY. Our trusted builder and yogi Bob Smith brought Karen’s idea to life. He built the prototype pictured here and is creating kits so everyone can make their own bee hive / hut / condo on Eco Yoga Day.

Come on out for this great event!! Reserve your spot by donating today

We have a new temporary Friday location for our 9am class:

10358 Southern Maryland Blvd, Dunkirk, MD 20754

(In the Safeway shopping center next to Atlas Carpet)

fireSaturday morning I got a phone message from Master Low of Black Belt Academy stating that there was a fire (i.e. case of arson) at the plaza shopping center in Dunkirk. I have not been to the scene yet but as I understand we will not be able to hold our regularly scheduled Friday morning classes at BBA for at least a month. I am looking into alternative sites and possibilities. I will let you know more about this when I know more. As far as I know, no one was injured in the blaze which started in the middle of the night on Friday.
